Gardens By The Bay

One of the most famous sights to see in Singapore are the Gardens By The Bay. You have probably already seen them on TV or on the pages of magazines and thought “it is amazing, and I have to see them”. At least it is what I thought when I saw them on TV. For those who don’t know what I am talking about, Gardens by the Bay are not just some beautiful tropical trees, it contains 18 massive manmade tree-shaped gardens that are known as Supertrees.

It is an award winning creation that was made not just to entertain the tourists, but also to educate them. As soon as you get closer to the Supertree, you will understand why this sightseeing is the most popular in Singapore.

What to do in Gardens by the Bay:

1. The main thing to do is to stroll among the Supertrees. It is an amazing walk and you definately will enjoy it. In case you got tired there are benches around the trees where you can take a minute to rest or even laydown and enjoy the majestic picture in front of you of the sky and the tops of the Supertrees.
2. For those who are not afraid of heights, you can do a Tree Top Walk. It is a highlight of the park. You can get on the bridge that connects the Supertrees and walk between them enjoying the view of the skyscrapers and the Marina Bay Sands.
3. Flower Dome is another place to visit in Gardens by the Bay. It contains a huge amount of plants from around the world. Flower Dome was named the biggest green house in the world.
4. Cloud Forest is another place you definitely should visit. This place is one of a kind and it contains many amazing things. A few of them are: the tallest indoor waterfall and a mountain (35 meters) covered in tropical plants
5. Explore the sculptures around the gardens. There are more than 40 sculptures from different parts of the world, that are located all around the gardens.
6. Get lunch at the one of the many cafes and restaurants around the Gardens by the Bay. There are also a few souvenir shops where you can get something to remember your trip.
7. Children’s Garden (Far East Organization) is a great place to go to if you are with a kid. It is an outdoor playground and a waterpark that kids would love to visit.
8. Visit the Heritage gardens if you want to know more about Singaporean nature life and its development over time.

Light Show At The Singapore Gardens By The Bay

Another well-known thing to do in Singapore is to visit the light show that takes place at the Gardens by the Bay everyday at 7:45 and 8:45 PM. The show is going for 15 minutes and is free of charge.

Usually around this time a huge crowd gathers around the Supertrees and take places on the benches around the trees and even on the ground.

Tip: Find the biggest Supertree and get a place on the ground close to it. Don’t wear white or light clothes and bring a bag or something you can put under your head and just lay down on the ground. In this case you will get the best view possible and your neck won’t hurt after staring up all the time.

Eat At One Of The Famous Singapore Hawker Centers

Singapore is a food capital of Asia and it is a crime not to explore all the flavours it offers you. The most famous places to eat are the Hawker centers. Each of these centers has a huge variety of  street food. Here you can try Singapore’s famous chicken rice or Hong Kong style dim sum, a delicious plate of mixed seafood. Something sweet or something salty, fried or steamed, or even famous, you will definitely find something for your liking.

There are a few stalls that are quite famous because of Anthony Bourdain or Gordon Ramsay said it is his favourite dish in Singapore. And there are some places that have been around for more than 70 years and just one family works there, a generation after generation learns a special secret to make the signature dish.

Get Dessert In Singapore

I already said that Singapore is a food capital of Asia. And it is famous for its fantastic desserts other than Hawker centres. The compaction between dessert places is big and desserts are getting on the new level here.

Explore The Jewel

The Chang’i airport is a great airport itself but it also has an amazing part that I put on one level with the Supertrees. It is the Jewel. It is located by Terminal 1 so as soon as you land and go through passport control, you can get to this magical place.

The first time I saw it, it was like going to Disneyland. You want to see everything and not to miss something interesting. The Jewel is a beautiful complex of stores, restaurants and other stuff and in the middle of it is a round waterfall (Rain Vortex) and real jungle (Forest Valley).

You can go on the first floor and just enjoy sitting among the tropical forest and relaxing or you can go to the top of the Jewel and overlook the entire jungle and waterfall at the cafes or restaurants.

On the top floor you will find different attractions such as a mirror maze, cloud forest, sky nets, canopy mazes, discovery slides, and a canopy bridge. You will enjoy all the places as much as the kids.

Enjoy The Colonial Architecture

As you probably know, Singapore was under British colonial rule and it made an impact on the culture as well as on the architecture.  Another tourist attraction is to see the old colonial buildings that bring a nice contrast to the modern place that Singapore is right now.

Singapore is known for its amazing skyscrapers and to see an old two – three stories narrow apartment building next to a 50 stories skyscraper just gives you a new prospective of the history and development of Singapore.

You don’t need to look specifically for the colonial buildings, just walk in the centre of Singapore and you will get by them in no time.

Walk Around Singapore’s Chinatown

If you travel a lot than you probably have been to a Chinatown before, but you still need to see it in Singapore. There are quite few sights to see:

Buddha Tooth Relic Temple. It is a four stories temple where the sacred relic is kept.

Sri Mariamman Temple is a Hindu temple. An important place for Tamil Hindus in Singapore.

NUS Baba House is a part of the National University of Singapore. This house is Peranakan heritage and gives a chance for visitors to explore the culture of the early 20^th century.

Chinatown street market. This is the Chinatown you expect to see with lots of stalls selling variety of food, silk and souvenirs.

Thian Hock Keng temple known as the temple of Heavenly Happiness. This is the oldest Chinese temple in Singapore built in 1820. It is probably also the most beautiful Chinese temple in Singapore. Tip for you: pay attention to the details of decorations.  

Visit The Merlion, The Symbol Of Singapore

Merlion is the symbol of Singapore and it is located on the marina across from the Marina Bay Sands. You easily will find the sculpture thanks to a huge crowd surrounding it.

It is a mythical animal with the head of a lion and a body of a fish and you can see this as a symbol that represent Singapore. There are actually a few sculptures of the Merlion in Singapore, but the most popular is at the Marina.

You can take a boat tour around the marina and get a few nice pictures from a different angle. However the boat is overpriced in my opinion at $25 SGD.

The Helix Bridge

Another place worth your time is the Helix Bridge. This is a walking bridge and it goes across the marina. The view from the bridge is fantastic, you can go on the special terraces that are made for taking photos and videos.

The best time to take a stroll on the bridge is after the sunset when the bridge itself and everything around it is lit up. The walk without stops for a picture will take less than ten minutes, but don’t be in a hurry and enjoy the magnificent view.
